Understanding of Communication and Types of Communication

Understanding communication is the process of conveying thoughts, ideas, information or feelings from someone to others. Communication is a process in which someone tries to give understanding by transferring messages or trying to create equality with other people. Communication can take place if there are components or elements, namely: source (communicator), message and target (communicant).

The word communication is an absorption element of English Communication which is etymologically derived from the Latin word communicatio (communis) which means the same meaning. Thus when communication occurs there should be a similarity of meaning about what is being discussed.

In addition to the similarity of meaning can also occur the willingness to accept an understanding or a belief to do or not to do an act.

Types of Communication

Communication requires the media as the delivery of messages, ideas, thoughts so that the communicator can understand what has been conveyed so that the response, response, and reaction of the communicant is obtained.

The development of communication media today is very much starting from the very simple to the most recent, but there are several types of communication, namely:

1. Oral and written communication.


Basic communication classification into oral and written is from the type of message to be delivered. This form is mostly done because it can cause intimacy between the two. In determining the form of communication whether oral or written, it is necessary to pay attention to several factors such as time, cost, communication skills and so on.

The use of this type of communication is very important and extensive, it has been proven that there are many speaking skills training, interpersonal communication and so on.

2. Verbal and non verbal communication


Information about one's feelings can be expressed verbally through what is said and how or how to say it. This means that from a word can be clarified through the tone of his voice, the loudness of the sound spoken.



So a person's feelings can be expressed through non-verbal cues such as face, sitting position, body movements and so on.

3. Communication down, up and to the side


Classification of communication in this type is based on the flow or path of information carried out in an organization or an office. In an office there are superiors, subordinates and peers or friends who have an equal position.

The definition of communication down is communication carried out by superiors to subordinates in an office. This communication usually functions as a driver, direction, command, and generally uses the means of memo, telephone, intercom or other tools. To hold communication above, subordinates usually make proposals, reports, opinions or provide explanations about the implementation of the work.
The definition of communication above in an office is usually less functional, or less balanced when compared with information down. Channels that are often used in offices are face-to-face meetings or informal conversations.
While the notion of communication to the side will occur automatically for members who work together in a team, or for people who have the same or balanced position. According to research on communication science revealed that the relationship to the side is a relationship that is very critical for the present. Communication to the side can be done face to face, telephone, or memo.

4. Formal and informal communication


Formal communication is communication that runs in accordance with the hierarchy of organizational authority, so that communication channels have been established by the organization. Whereas informal communication is communication that runs freely between employees regardless of position or rank. So sometimes giving birth to informal leaders.

5. One-way and two-way communication


One-way communication is communication that focuses on delivering messages, without expecting feedback and this is usually done in offices in the form of instructions and instructions.

This one-way communication can take place quickly and cheaply but is unsatisfactory because the recipient of the message does not have the opportunity to question the information received so that it is not satisfactory.



Concrete examples include occurring in advertisements, where advertisers convey information about something, for example, without the need to get feedback.

Two-way communication is certainly communication that provides an opportunity for feedback on the message delivered. This type of communication process is enough to give satisfaction to the communicant but is usually quite slow and inefficient.
